Volunteering

We give our people an extra day of leave each year to volunteer with charities and organisations which are close to their hearts.

If you’re a not-for-profit who would like assistance with an activity in the Latrobe Valley or Gippsland community, please get in touch with us at sponsorship@loyyangb.com.

Lifeline Gippsland

Three of our teams used their volunteer days with Lifeline Gippsland to support two initiatives, helping redirect valuable funds back into vital crisis and suicide prevention services.

At the Morwell warehouse, volunteers tackled a significant backlog of donated goods. With centres temporarily pausing new donations due to safety risks and limited capacity, the work was hands on and practical. The team sorted items for resale, repurposing or redistribution, and prepared old garments for reuse as cleaning rags, creating an additional income stream.

The effort also extended to restoring three inactive warehouses, with teams completing extensive cleaning, sorting and remediation work to transform long unused spaces and removed what had been an overwhelming task for the organisation.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity, enthusiasm and teamwork shown by every volunteer. Their efforts represent a powerful act of community care.”

TRRCR

Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve

One of the strengths of our volunteer program is the lasting relationships our people build with the community groups they support. Our Maintenance Team 3 has done just that with the Friends of the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve, completing four volunteer days together.

Across these visits, the team has contributed to a range of works, including track improvements, gardening, installing seating, and repairing and replacing fencing, all helping to enhance the reserve for the community to enjoy. Most recently, they restored and reinstalled a noticeboard that had fallen into disrepair, giving it a new lease on life to showcase beautiful photos of the reserve.

“We are greatly appreciative of Loy Yang B which assists us to continue improving the bush reserve for the residents of Traralgon and surrounding areas. The work you do is valued by our volunteers and the wider community.”

Connan Park

Connan Park Scout Camp

Ahead of summer, a team of our maintenance workers spent their volunteer day on fire preparedness activities at Connan Park Scout Camp, cleaning up fallen trees, clearing tracks and mowing campsites to help reduce the bushfire risk. It’s a task that had become overwhelming for the small volunteer committee that manages the park, but one our team could complete in the space of a day.

“A heartfelt thank you for your hard work and dedication which have made a significant impact on the safety and beauty of our beloved camp. By clearing potential fire hazards and maintaining the campsites, you’ve ensured a safer environment for all Scouts and visitors. We deeply appreciate your commitment and the countless hours you’ve invested in this vital task.”

A Better Life for Foster Kids

After a successful volunteer day with A Better Life for Foster Kids in 2023, our Reliability and Planning team were keen to return in 2024. Their efforts helped further improve the charity’s premises and strengthen the relationships formed over previous years, including the hands-on support we provided to assist with flood damage in 2021.

Our Reliability and Planning team also offered assistance to the veteran group which shares a building with A Better Life for Foster Kids. They were keen for our assistance having seen the wonderful work done for their neighbours in the previous year. This resulted in a refresh of rooms for A Better Life for Foster Kids and new garden beds for the veterans.

“We are so lucky to have the support of Loy Yang B. When we were flooded a few years ago, you were immediately there to help, and in the past we have had teams in doing work on our rooms. We’re so grateful for this relationship.”

Gippsland Plains Rail Trail

One of our maintenance teams used its volunteer day to support the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail, contributing to the upkeep of this valued community asset. Their work included removing graffiti and repainting a historic rail cart at Cowwarr, clearing barbed wire from fencing at Glengarry, and cutting and stacking 11 fallen trees near Traralgon to improve safety and access along the trail.

Maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers, the rail trail delivers social, environmental and economic benefits to the region, and the team’s efforts helped ease the workload and maintain its high standard.

Our support for the organisation also extended to our apprentices giving their time to help install three sculptures as part of the Railway Dog project, helping to bring a story of local significance to life.

“I can’t believe how much work they got done on the volunteer day. What they have helped us achieve is an amazing gift to the community.”

— Gippsland Plains Rail Trail Committee of Management’s Helen Hoppner
