About Us

Loy Yang B is a brown coal-fired power station in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, approximately 160 km east of Melbourne. Our two electricity
generating units together provide up to 1,200 MW of baseload power and supply approximately 20% of Victoria’s energy needs.

Reliable and low cost power generation

We are one of the lowest cost and most reliable generators in the National Electricity Market. Our two electricity generating units together provide up to 1,200MW of baseload power, approximately 20% of Victoria’s energy needs. Unit 1 came online in 1993 and Unit 2 in 1996. The power station is supplied with coal from the adjacent AGL-owned Loy Yang A open cut mine.

We have always operated under private ownership with a focus on maintaining a high level of reliability and plant integrity. This proactive maintenance, including upgrades to both of our units in 2019 and 2020, underpins our solid reliability and allows our plant to operate flexibly to support the integration of renewables. Our current asset strategy is set to deliver reliable operations to 2047, however we recognise our power station’s closure will be heavily influenced by key stakeholders and the requirements of the National Electricity Market.

We know Australians want to transition to renewable energy and are investigating how we can support national emissions reduction targets while also generating a reliable supply of electricity. This includes options for our power station site to continue providing related grid services after coal-fired generation ceases.

This transformation would support Victoria’s ambitious emissions reduction targets while continuing to generate reliable and affordable electricity.

Industry leading plant performance

Our power station consistently achieves world-class reliability, availability and performance when benchmarked against Australian counterparts, unlike many other coal-fired assets. We contribute significantly to system strength services and have the most flexible coal-fired plant in Victoria which supports the integration of renewables, with:

  • Industry leading availability including 95.95% in FY24, and a 10-year average availability of 96.8%.
  • Long-term unplanned losses below 1.5%, with FY22 and FY23 being less than1% and FY24 at 1.3%. We have consistently been available to provide firm, baseload energy into the electricity grid for greater than 96.8% of the time over the past 10 years.
  • Flexible operations to ramp up and down according to market needs including integration into the Australian Energy Market Operator’s new very fast frequency control ancillary services market during FY24 to better balance energy supply and demand as renewable sources are integrated and in the event of generator outages and other fluctuations, keeping the power system more stable.
  • Minimum generation capability to below 240MW.

Ownership

Loy Yang B is owned by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited (CTFE), the flagship private investment holding company of the Cheng family in Hong Kong and is operated by its holding company Latrobe Valley Power (Holdings) Pty Ltd (Latrobe Valley Power).

We have a capacity agreement with CTFE’s other Australian energy subsidiary, Alinta Energy, providing it with a share of our power output. This delivers a strategic benefit through access to a low-cost reliable energy supply, helping make energy more affordable for Australian homes and businesses in our region and beyond. Latrobe Valley Power and Alinta Energy are both subsidiaries of a CTFE group entity, Pioneer Sail Australia Pty Ltd.
