A Gippsland family has a roof over their heads just in time for Christmas, with completion of a project to build two new homes for women and children experiencing homelessness due to family violence.

Named ‘Haven,’ the house and a separate studio living space were constructed in the Latrobe Valley as an initiative of the Victorian Homeless Fund (VHF) a volunteer-based charity focused on providing long-term, stable homes to give women and children a future and break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.

Loy Yang B and Alinta Energy contributed $130,000 towards the build, which was constructed by local builder Sherridon Homes and Brilley Co at cost price on land donated to the VHF by the Payton Foundation. All furnishings, landscaping and other items to make the house a home were donated by the Housing Industry Association’s members and many local suppliers who gave their time, expertise and all materials needed to create a home which is ready to live in.

This week marked the official opening of the house by Federal MP for Monash, Mary Aldred and it’s now in the hands of Women’s Property Initiatives (WPI), an organisation which supports and advocates for at risk women and children, including by providing permanent, affordable homes. WPI has appointed a family to occupy both spaces within Haven.

Several attendees of the opening of the house stand in a room.

Loy Yang B General Manager Tony Hicks said it made for a special Christmas present for the family.

“This is more than bricks and mortar, it’s a fresh start for families seeking safety and security,” he said.

“It’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together when we choose to make a lasting difference,” Alinta Energy’s Executive Director Corporate Affairs, Sustainability and Governance, Sarah McNamara added.

Construction of the house commenced in July this year, and VHF Chair Colleen May thanked the “army of generous suppliers who donated everything from the earthworks to keys to the doors” in a matter of months.

“We all know that the problem of homelessness and family violence is huge and we can’t solve it by ourselves but together we can make a difference,” she said.

“These homes will make a life-changing difference to families in need by providing them not only with long-term stable homes, but with safety, security and brighter futures.”
